Who we are

Roofing Roughnecks is one of Kenney Construction's specialty divisions. Kenney Construction was founded in 2019 by Frank Kenney, who has worked in construction since he was 14, and it is licensed, insured and bonded in Virginia (DPOR #2705187519). The company is based in Herndon and works throughout Reston and the Fairfax and Loudoun County communities around it. We handle roof replacement, roof repair, storm and insurance-related roofing, and window replacement, plus the roof inspections and ventilation and gutter-edge work that go with them.

Real roofing work in Reston

Roofing Roughnecks has completed three separate re-roofing projects in Reston, handled directly rather than subcontracted. The photos below come from those jobs: flashing and underlayment going in around a dormer and chimney, a whole roof dried in with synthetic underlayment, and a tear-off down to the deck. We don't have finished-shingle photos from these three yet, so we haven't labeled any of them as finished. The projects page shows all three, plus finished roofs from nearby towns labeled with the town where they were done.

Why roofing in Reston is different

Reston is an unincorporated planned community in Fairfax County, so there's no town building office: permits, when a scope needs one, go through Fairfax County Land Development Services. The bigger difference is Reston Association. Homes within Reston Association are covered by the Reston Deed, and its Design Review Board (DRB) and covenants staff review most exterior changes. Roofing has its own Design Guideline, many cluster associations have their own approved roof products and colors, and Reston Town Center homes go through a separate Town Center Design Review Board.

Reston's housing makes it interesting too. The early clusters near Lake Anne include 1960s modernist townhouses, some with flat roofs, while later clusters include traditional-style houses and townhouses. Add the tree cover Reston was planned around, and a roof here often involves shade, debris, moss, and an approval file that matters as much as the shingles.

Reston Association approval comes first

Most exterior changes in Reston, including many roof replacements, need Reston Association review before work starts. Settle your shingle line and color, check them against your Design Guideline or cluster standard, and get the written decision before a start date is set.

What to expect when you call

  • A look at the roof and, where it's safe and useful, the attic, before anyone recommends repair or replacement.
  • A straight answer on whether the problem looks isolated or roof-wide.
  • A written scope: tear-off, decking repair if needed, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, any skylight work, and cleanup.
  • The manufacturer, product line and color written down, which is exactly what a Reston Association roofing application asks you to show.
  • Materials from manufacturers the division installs: GAF and CertainTeed shingles and Leaf Relief gutter guards.
  • The same company from the estimate through the final walkthrough.
